The measuring principle of the Crystalsizer is based on the diffraction of incoherent "white" light in the particle flow. The light source consists of a halogen lamp whose light is modulated in a ring shape by means of a liquid crystal display (LCD).
The LCD generates light in the form of circular rings of different diameters. An LCD diameter results in a detector signal when particles of a certain matching size are in the sample. These particles then deflect the light to the detector at a suitable angle.
